Fitness Friday: The Power of Planks

You've probably heard about the plank rage.  Everyone loves planks, encourages planks and swears by "the plank." But why?!

Let me tell you a few great reasons why you should try to plank a few days during the week.

  • Works multiple areas of your body in ONE move
  • You can do it anywhere!
  • Improves your posture
  • Strengthens hips and pelvic floor
  • You can change the intensity - lift one leg, twist etc.

What areas will you work when you plank?

Every red circle, you will feel the burn!  Your butt, your back, your obliques, your abs, your arms - you name it, you WILL work it when doing a plank!

There are a number of variations you can do from this position as well.

Here are a few options:
  1. Lift your left arm and right leg. Hold it for 30 seconds and switch.
  2. Lift one leg, pull your knee into your chest and extend back out.
  3. Twist your hips and tap one side on the ground, then switch.
  4. Start in a full plank (on your hands) While holding your plank go down to your right elbow, left elbow, then back up to your right hand and left hand. (Make sense?! )
** You can do your planks on your hands or on your elbows like above.  Elbows are a modified version of a true plank. (I have to do mine this way due to my arthritis)

Do you have a favorite plank workout that I didn't include up top?  Let me know your favorite in the comments!
